What is a Watershed anyway? ¿Qué es una cuenca hidrológica de todos modos?

A watershed is an area of land that drains or “sheds” water into creeks or maybe a river or a lake and empties that body of water into another body of water at one point. Cup your hands in front of you as if you were trying to hold some water but don’t overlap your pinkies. Pretend your hands are forming a mini watershed. Your thumbs are the highest peaks, and  your index fingers are the highest ridges that form the boundaries around the watershed. Your pinkies form a creek or river. Rain or snow that falls inside your fingers goes into your watershed and any rain that falls outside your fingers will go to another watershed. Tilt the tips of your fingers down a bit. Any rain or water that falls or flows in the basin of your palms will flow down to the pinkie creek and then out through the little hole at the end of your pinkies, into another river, that is part of another watershed. Every piece of land and every creek or river is part of a watershed. Water that falls around here flows into Matson Creek, which flows into Wolf Creek; Wolf Creek flows into the Bear River, which flows to the Feather River, then the Sacramento River, the Delta, out through the 3 big bays around the Bay Area, and finally to the ocean. Una cuenca hidrológica es un área de la tierra que drena o “arroja” agua en arroyos o tal vez en un río o un lago y vacía esa masa de agua en otra masa de agua a cierto punto. Si colocas tus manos en forma de copa frente a tí como si estuvieras tratando de retener un poco de agua, sin superponer los dedos meñiques, puedes imaginar que tus manos están formando una mini cuenca hidrológica. Tus pulgares son los picos más altos y tus dedos índices son las crestas más altas que forman los límites alrededor de la cuenca. Tus meñiques forman un arroyo o un río. La lluvia o la nieve que cae dentro de sus dedos va a su cuenca y cualquier lluvia que cae fuera de sus dedos irá a otra cuenca. Si inclinas un poco las puntas de los dedos hacia abajo, cualquier lluvia o agua que caiga o fluya en la cuenca de sus palmas fluirá hacia el arroyo de los dedos meñiques y luego saldrá a través del pequeño agujero al final de sus dedos meñiques, hacia otro río, que es parte de otra cuenca hidrológica. Cada pedazo de terreno y cada arroyo o río es parte de una cuenca hidrológica. El agua que cae por acá fluye y llega hasta Matson Creek, que desemboca en Wolf Creek; Wolf Creek desemboca en el río Bear, que desemboca en el río Feather, luego en el río Sacramento, el Delta, y luego sale a través de las tres grandes bahías alrededor del Área de la Bahía y, al final, al mar.
